Dirk Holemans

Dirk Holemans

Biography

Dirk Holemans has more than twenty years of experience in the broad field of ecological issues, and acquired academic degrees in the fields of engineering, philosophy and economy. As a former academic researcher and lecturer, through his experience as Member of Parliament and government advisor, he is convinced of the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to ecological challenges. Since 2010, Holemans is coordinator of Oikos, think tank for social-ecological change. The organisation’s objective is to enrich public debate, sciences and agenda-setting with a progressive ecological perspective. He is also editor-in-chief of the Journal Oikos, which focuses on issues such as commons, environmental philosophy and nature conservation.

Interests

In our current world, people feel more and more insecure. Climate change, unstable financial markets and the erosion of the welfare state make these feelings quite rational. At the same time, the freedom the neoliberal politics promises in reality boils down to consumer choice for groups with enough buying power. In many fields, such food or medicines, only a handful multinationals control the global market. Most governments only reinforce the dwindling of freedom and security by shortsighted austerity politics. At the same time, a hopeful counter current is developing. It is constituted by citizens rediscovering collective action, becoming producers again (in the field of energy, food or care); and city governments developing a strong climate policy, local food systems and sustaining urban commons. Making citizens and cities more autonomous, they reopen the field of real freedom and construct new ways of security.

Dirk Holemans

Biographie

Interesses
